Review of Animal Beauty by Kristin Roskifte

Review of Animal Beauty by Kristin Roskifte

It all starts when a zoo elephant finds a beauty magazine. “According to the beauty experts”, the elephant learns just how unsightly wrinkles are. So naturally the elephant uses wrinkle removing cream. Zebra is so impressed, she borrows the beauty magazine and finds that horizontal stripes have become passé. One by one, all the zoo animals borrow the magazine and follow the “expert” advice. Soon, the zoo-goers are unhappy, since the animals no longer look anything like they’re supposed to.

Animal Beauty is a funny and imaginative take on what “beauty” should be. The illustrations are so colorful, full of action and adorably cute, they’ll surely capture and hold a child’s attention. There’s a valuable lesson contained within this book. This can be used as a conversation starter for teaching children how we’re all beautiful in our own unique way. I love children’s books that have positive messages and this is certainly one of them. I would highly recommend Animal Beauty to parents, grandparents, caregivers and teachers.
